Crap [Dec. 27th, 2007|07:04 am]
So housing prices fell last month again, setting a record for largest drop in like 9 ages of the earth. Except... except in 2 of the 3 places we were interested in moving: Portland, Seattle and Charlotte. That last one just has to be karma or something. This blows, if my own house loses value and the target cities gain... yuck.

Got away a bit late, and after a detour around a closed I-85 with the help of iphone, we're back on track

APv2.0 has arrived [Jun. 29th, 2007|07:21 am]
[mood | bouncy]

I ordered this like june 3rd and it arrived yesterday. Had to sit on it until like 1730 or so. It took like 5 minutes to download the stock ECU and another 5 or so to upload the new map. So, 10 minutes later I had 25 more HP and 40 ft-lbs of torque. Yay beer!

Tried to test it out last night on the way to meet sdewd and lil-a for dinner. Unfortunately, traffic going and rain returning conspired against the gas pedal. This morning of course I was stuck behind some caddy on spalding/mt. vernon, so that sucked. Sunday at least should give me the chance to see any diff ( though at low RPMs it does feel stronger ).

With T out of town next weekend, I'm gonna head up to the NoJoJa mountains a week from Sunday ( if it doesn't rain ). I'll prolly get lost, but the hills should be a good test as well.

fanboi alert! [Mar. 18th, 2007|02:47 pm]
I have a number of odd quirks. One of them being submarine fanboishness. Specifically, WWII submarines. As chance left me unable to actually be in the silent service ( :( ), I'm reduced to video games.

I thought SH4 was supposed to be out in July 2k7, but it actually comes out this coming wednesday! Curse of curses! Somehow I must find a way to get some time this week.

Chunk o' Meat [Mar. 13th, 2007|06:47 am]
Went back to Vreny's Saturday. Ordered something called "Bavarian Schweinhaxe," which I think means "A leg of a Bavarian Pig." Served up 2 full meals out of it ( could have been more probably ), but...

Anyway, pictures behind the cut ( taken after I'd been working on it for a few minutes ) )

YAM [Dec. 4th, 2006|12:05 pm]
Yet another monday...

This past weekend was pretty hectic. We drove to Tallahassee Friday night then over to JAX early Saturday to see gatech get beat. Got back Saturday night around 11 and both of us crashed pretty hard. [info]turdburgler had to work Sunday, so I ended up puttering around ze house 'fore heading to [info]geebs b-day. Got back around 10 and crashed again.

My SATA drive showed up Friday while we were gone. I had a neighbor rescue it from the cold/elements. I tried to get it from them on Sunday, but I think they headed out or something. Anyway, as I was driving somewhere, the guy behind me honked and told me I had a package on mah back bumper... what? I was home pretty much all Sunday, with the garage open... of all the places to put something. Sigh, no harm done. I'll plug it in and see if it works better than the last one. I really need to get etch on there. Its been hard to do mah netlink stuff remotely ( oops, uh, now I can't talk to mah computer anymore ).

I need to pull out my coffee maker and start using the timing feature on it. It would be nice to have a nice warm pot for me in the AM on cold days like this.

Whats new school? [Oct. 12th, 2006|11:29 am]
Old school

Ferret Lina seems to be doing a bit better. She eats and drinks periodically on her own now. She still gets force-fed a paste that looks like liquified cardboard and smells of cat breath and is on a battery of several medications. I've been getting up at 545 to feed her and do her IV this week. The loss of 30 minutes a day of sleep is slowly ticking up. Today I had to stop and get coffee... segue!

So I roll into Caribou this AM anxious to try their new Obsidian Dark Roast. They aren't brewing it today though... boo! I settled for a normal dark roast, which is the first non-fancified coffee I have purchased from them. It ain't half bad! Given my almost ( for me at least ) complete caffeine deficit since starting work at my new employer ( no mass production swill coffee machine! ), it should be a kick in the pants. I hope so. Speaking of work, I finally remembered to bring mah "Lil' General's Junior 6th Panzer Division" in! They are now holding firm on the line of "left PC corner" to "right PC corner," and will fight to the last!

I got the new Evanesence album last week... I've decided its just not as good as the previous one ( which has pretty much every song being ggggreat! ). It has some decent songs, but it doesn't work as well. Its a sophomore album, so I guess thats to be expected.

We got Samurai Warriors 2 this past week. The "[:alpha:]+ Warriors [:digit:]" series is always fun. 2 is indeed > 1 for this particular branch. They really could do a lot with like "Arthurian Warriors" or something like that... you get Mordred, Gawain, Lancelot... it could work!

Ah well, to work

Need Input! [Aug. 17th, 2006|08:43 am]
Ack, I'm only on coffee cup #1 today and am waiting for the second to trickle thru. They ( the royal they ) should invent a coffee machine that never goes empty... if it detects the coffee pot getting lighter, it releases more water. The problem would be getting more grounds in.

Hmm, actually, if you hooked up a bean grinder, a magazine of filters, it may work... You turn the machine on, the coffee pot is detected as empty. A new filter is put into place, a measured quantity of beans are ground and placed in the appropriate location. After this is complete, a measured amount of water is allowed to trickle thru. When the coffee pot is full, it stops. When it is empty, it trickles.

Now, after X cups of water passing over the grounds, they will lose their potency. So, you have to keep track of how much water was used. After Y cups of water has been used, the old filter and grounds are shuffled off to another world ( a temporary waste receptical that can be emptied ), new grounds/filters are put in place, and the pot topped off.

Of course, you would need to be able to tell if a pot was there, so you'd probably have some magnetic latch that triggers when the pot is in place. That way, the auto-drip process would stop and not make a mess.

Hmm, it brilliant!

Nietzsche would be proud [Aug. 14th, 2006|04:54 pm]
Or maybe not.

Forgot C^Darwin at home, so I ran to Borders to see what other fun stuff there is. Picked up the optimistically titled "Science of Good and Evil." It purports to take an evolutionary perspective on morality ( which I am a big fan of, coincidentally ). Hopefully, it will not be a bunch of self(me)-affirming academic nonsense. The intro was fun :)

Graphs and Spam [Aug. 3rd, 2006|12:09 pm]
So, I had this idea about how to classify spam. Instead of doing Bayesian analysis on it like a lot of the blockers seem to do, I had the following thought, basically turning the Spammer's markov chain's against them.

To introduce: I get spam with what seem to be a random markov walk thru a dictionary ( at least, according to my poor understanding of math ). Now, it almost sounds like valid english, but it isn't. So, what if I were to generate a graph, with all my email as the input, and generated a ( what is it, a markov model? ) directed graph from each word that is used, to accepted words that follow it. Actually, I have 2 graphs, one for good words, one for bad words ( though I haven't decided if I need this yet ).

When an email arrives, you do a walk thru the good list and see how long the longest chain of "valid" words you can find is. Now, as my emails has a lot of the same words in it, in similiar orders, valid emails should have long chains. Invalid emails should have short chains.

I need a bit of munging on some stuff, as not all emails are the same, and a simple email with just a time "7:30" for example, would probably not be found. I also don't know if I need the graph of spam words. As it seems to be primarily a random walk, at best, my bad list will become a graph of random words, which, if it gets big enough may encompass the totality of the good graph. The question then becomes one of scoring. If using a bad graph is out, then does the spamisity become the ration of longest-chain-length / message length, with 0 being closer to spammy?

Also, my brain is having trouble grokking a way to ensure short, one-off emails "BWW today?" don't get tagged as spam the first time.

Thoughts, comments, ideas?

LoadRunner [Jul. 13th, 2006|08:02 am]
No, I haven't switched to QA, but I did stay in a holiday inn express last night...

Seriously, this program is really pretty cool. I'm (design) testing our firewall rules by accessing the webapps behind them with it. I guess it makes sense that such wonderful toys would exist, but I was ignant.

stuffed [Jul. 12th, 2006|07:37 am]
I fear I ate too much yesterday.

Saffron for lunch, Muffaletta for dinner. All in all, very tasty, but way too much. I think my stomach is protesting now. Poor thing probably will kill me after Fogo tonight.

I had some guy in a lime green pickup truck admire ze car as he waited at a traffic light. I think most people look right past it. People that know what it is, however, let their eyes linger a bit, because in a-town ( thats Alpharetta, A-town would be Atlanta ), they aren't too common. Hell, as sad as it is, you see more Vipers/Maseratis/etc than you do STis. Heh, thats probably cuz people in a-town don't buy subies :(

Yup, the big wing on the back says "bottom quartile!"

Sleepy [Jul. 11th, 2006|07:29 am]
Went to Inoko in Athens last night with [info]turdburgler und her sister. T's pop was there, and it was fun. Got back late ( for us ), so now I am sleepy.

My leg seems to be doing a bit better this AM. Yay tylenol!

We are going to Saffron today for tasty-tasty lunch. This is probably one of the high points of the week.

Bah, I'm just procrastinatin', back to ze grind.

Italy is teh winner [Jul. 10th, 2006|07:38 am]
Germany came in as 2nd loser. At least they lost to teh winner though. Yesterday's game was fun until "ze Incidente'." At which point, the whole mood was just kinda spoiled. The Italians seemed to be happy, though shoot outs suck. Oh well, it is a fitting conclusion to my 4-year cycle of watching sports.

Today is Monday. Last night was kinda sucky. Not sure what was wrong, but my right thigh/leg started hurting last night after dinner and got progressively worse. It took a while to fall asleep, and it kept waking me up intermittently. Alas, I fear I did not get much sleep, but hopefully the caffeine will be flowing in gushing rivers of hot goodness to stave off any collapse by our hero.

Got a past due notice in the mail yesterday on a safety deposit box we opened last month. The funny thing is, we paid for it when we opened it ( rather, we filled out a deposit slip or something and handed it to the woman opening the box ). She was supposed to have taken care of it. Sigh. Now I have to drive over there during lunch to get it straightened out. I've never had a past due bill in my life, and to get one because of some moron's incompetence makes me furious. There are a lot of jobs that you can screw up and not cause problems, but if you screw up people's money, you should be fired. [info]turdburgler tells me I am holding them to an irrational standard, but I don't really think I am. Not sure what I will do if they don't fix their mistake ( other than pay the penalty AND take the hit on my credit rating, which has far more dire consequences than the 10$ penalty )... Hopefully they will be reasonable.

Yay friday! [Jul. 7th, 2006|07:40 am]
I didn't seem to sleep well last night, and consequently, I am sleepy now. The coffee is slowly starting to work, but will be another 20 or so before I'm no longer miserable.

I've been reading up on EJB 3.0. If anything, the persistence layer stuff in it is nothing short of magical. Unfortunately, OS X Panzer doesn't "support" jdk1.5 ( never mind the fact that I managed to get it installed... eclipse doesn't like it, and I am too lazy to play with java in vi, so nyeh ). Piping eclipse over apple's gimpy X11 interface doesn't seem to be too much an option either. Hmm, I guess I do have a desktop I can try this on...

I've figured I suck at math. I've been reading Applied Cryptography a page or 2 a day now for a while... I'm half done, and while I understand the jist of it, my ( terrible? barely existant? ) grasp of modular arithmetic is so stunning it leaves me a slack-jawed mouth-breather. Seriously, its probably just a question of not devoting the necessary energy to recall that stuff from MATH 2503 with Prof. Dana Randall, but man...

Anyway, its friday, and things always taste better on fridays!
